Figuring Out the Next Big Step in Your Career

A career is different from that of a job or a hobby as it is something you’ll have to do in the long run and to basically support life. Most consider it as their inspiration for day-to-day living, others even a mission.

Because building a career takes so much time and hard work, it’s normal to feel a bit overwhelmed when choosing the appropriate steps on how to build your path. It’s human nature to seek growth and personal development. And internal satisfaction could definitely be achieved when one is aware of the value of what one does on the daily.

But what happens when you feel stuck or in a rut? Here’s what you could do next in your career:

Q: Should I stay or should I go?

A: Do you see yourself excited to go to work in the morning? Does the work you do still challenge you? Are you completely satisfied with how you spend your days?

If you’ve answered yes to all questions, then it’s probably best to stay since it seems you love what you do. But if you’ve answered no to any of the questions, you may have to rethink staying in the job. That’s probably your mind telling you that it’s itching for something new.

Q: Should I pursue higher education?

A: If you have a clear idea on what you want to be and if you believe getting a higher degree will allow you to do much more in your field of interest then there’s really no reason not to try it out.

However, if you’re unsure if the path you’ve chosen would need you the necessary additional years of education then you probably have to consider a lot of things. Do take note that pursuing higher education requires a lot of time, energy, and resources so you better be sure you’ll be 100% committed once you start.

Q: Should I try another industry?

A: Do you see yourself doing work other than what you are currently doing? Do you crave for a new challenge or a new environment? Maybe it’s high time that you try to stretch yourself by exploring an industry different from your own.

This step pushes you out of your comfort zone. If you have the patience and the dedication to start from the ground up then this is the step you should take. You’ll have to learn how to learn, unlearn and relearn. So be prepared.

Q: Am I making the right choices?

A: Work can be stressful but it can also be fulfilling. Do you feel a sense of fulfillment each time you get your job done? Is there absolutely no place you’d rather do and work at? These are the questions to ask yourself if you truly are happy at your workplace.

Happiness is considered a one of the common reasons why people choose to stay in a job. Sure, happiness could be subjective but most of the time you would know if you’re happy if you still look forward to each day even after all the stress, heartaches, and frustrations.

Essentially, it all depends on what makes the most sense to you. Talk to as many people, reflect as often and although cliche, answers will find its way to you.
